Services
Four ways I help engineering firms and project owners deliver projects with less friction.
Fractional project management
Busy periods, a project outside your usual scope, a PM on leave, or not enough steady volume to justify another full-time hire. I step in as a senior PM on the terms that fit, from a single project to a few days every month. I work inside your processes and tools, alongside your engineers.
What I do
- Project setup: scope, schedule, budget and staffing plan
- Contract administration: certificates of payment, change orders, site instructions
- Subconsultant and contractor coordination
- Tendering and procurement packages
- Client communication, progress reports and meeting minutes
- Coordination of commissioning and close-out
Good fit for
Energy and mechanical engineering consultancies that need senior PM capacity without another full-time hire.
Client-side project management
On a capital project, the designers and contractors each look after their own scope. As your client-side project manager, I look after yours. I plan the project, run procurement and contracts, keep consultants and contractors coordinated, and give you plain reporting on schedule, cost and risk.
It’s the role I held for public utilities in Sweden, including on a 100 MW biomass power plant worth about $200M CAD.
What I do
- Project charter, plan, schedule, budget and risk register
- Procurement strategy, tender documents and tender evaluation
- Contract negotiation and administration, including change management
- Coordination of designers, contractors and other stakeholders
- Progress, cost and risk reporting to you and your sponsors
- Commissioning coordination, handover and close-out
Good fit for
Utilities, institutions, property owners and developers delivering capital projects without an in-house project management team.
Project systems & quality management
Most firms’ project management lives in individual PMs’ heads and spreadsheets. I turn that into a system: one way to set up, track and close projects, with templates people actually like using. I’ll also write the quality plans EGBC requires.
What I do
- Review how projects run today, and where time and margin are lost
- Set up a PMO: project setup, tracking and close-out standards
- Build contract-admin toolkits: CCOs, change orders, certificates of payment, field review and shop drawing review formats, commissioning plans, close-out checklists
- Write and maintain the EGBC Professional Practice Management Plan (PPMP) your Permit to Practice requires
- Build project trackers with the EGBC risk assessment process built in, and automate the record-keeping behind your PPMP
- Train your PMs and support them as the new system beds in
What you get
A working PMO, a template library in your own formats, a PPMP ready for your Permit to Practice, and trained staff.
Good fit for
Growing firms whose processes haven’t kept pace, and firms preparing for or updating their EGBC Permit to Practice.
AI-assisted project automation
Project managers lose hours every week to work a computer could do: pulling numbers from the project system, checking hours against budgets, chasing status, re-typing the same information into reports. I build tools that do that work and put the result in front of the right person, often as a plain email.
What I build
- Project-health monitoring: daily checks of hours, budgets and expected profit, with alerts the day something changes
- PM digests: a weekly summary per PM of what needs attention, written in plain language
- Document drafting: first drafts of reports and recurring documentation from your own data and templates
- Quality-records automation: scripts that take on much of the documentation and record-keeping your PPMP requires, with AI interpreting the content and drafting the records
- Compliance pre-checks: flag gaps in each project’s quality records before an audit does
How I work
I start from your existing tools, so there’s no new platform to adopt. I keep secrets and client data inside your accounts, and I hand over documentation so your team can run and change the tools.
Good fit for
Firms with a project management system full of data that nobody has time to read.
How engagements work
| By the project | Fractional | Fixed-scope build | |
|---|---|---|---|
| What it is | I run one defined project | A set number of days a month | A defined deliverable |
| Typical length | The life of the project | 3 to 12 months, renewable | 2 to 12 weeks |
| Good for | Capacity gaps, specialist projects | Ongoing PM capacity, PMO lead | PPMP, templates, automations |
Questions
- Do you do engineering design?
- No. I’m a P.Eng. and I can review and coordinate technical work, but I sell project management and project systems. Design stays with your engineers.
- Do you work on site or remotely?
- Both. I’m based in Victoria and work remotely across BC, on site when the project needs it.
- Which systems do you work with?
- Your own. I work in your tools and templates, and build automations on what you already run: Google Workspace or Microsoft 365, SharePoint, and project management systems with an API. The AI side uses the Claude API. I build with AI-assisted development, which makes custom tools quick enough to be worth it for a small firm.
- Is EGBC involved in your PPMP work?
- EGBC doesn’t accredit outside PPMP services. I’ve written and maintained a PPMP that’s in daily use under a Permit to Practice, and I’ll build yours around how your firm actually works.
